Driver Sued On Behalf Of Victim’s Family

The civil affairs administration of Tonglu, Zhejiang Province, sued a driver who hit and killed an unidentified homeless man on behalf of his family.

The accident happened last October when a motorist knocked down the homeless man, who later died in hospital. His identity is still unknown.

The court ordered the driver to pay the relatives of teh homeless man 330,000 yuan (US$42,201).

The civil affairs administration will keep the money for five years in the hope that the victim’s family comes forward to claim it.

If no one claims the money in this period, the administration will donate the money to a charity fund.

Cat Recovers After Mousetrap Incident

A man had to rush his cat to the vet recently after it was caught in a mousetrap at his home in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province.

It took Wu over four hours to free his cat from the mousetrap after he found it howling in pain. He took the cat to the local animal clinic for emergency treatment.

Woman Sues Hospital Over Vitro Treatment

A woman sued a hospital in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, last week, seeking compensation of 1.13 million yuan (US$139,334) after it allegedly botched up her in virtro fertilization treatment last year.

The hospital was to use sperm of the woman’s husband for the procedure. She gave birth in March.

But the blood test revealed that the baby’s blood type did not match that of either of the parents.

Police conducted a paternity test that indicated the hospital may have used the wrong sperm in the procedure.

Owner Locks Up Aggressive Rooster

A rooster was locked in chains for over a year in the city of Maoming, Guangdong Province, after it injured an elderly woman and a 6-year-old girl in December 2005.

The rooster turned violent a year and a half ago when it started attacking other roosters in the village of Maonan.

Its owner, Wei, locked the rooster in a courtyard after it attacked the woman and child.

Wei said he was yet to find out why his rooster had suddenly become so aggressive.

Boys Turns Yellow After Eating Too Many Oranges

An 11 year old boy turned a yellowish color after eating too many oranges in Chongqing Municipality recently.

The boy’s mother took him to several local hospitals, but none were able to get to the bottom of his skin colour.

He was later diagnosed with carotenemia when his mother divulged that he had eaten two or three kilograms of oranges every day last week.

The boy was told his skin colour should return to normal once he cut down his intake of oranges.

Mao’s Dinner Plates On Show In Nanjing

Nanjing museum recently unveiled an exhibition of what’s possibly the most expensive porcelain in the world, made exclusively for Mao Zedong by a group of experts in 1975.

One bowl from the collection is worth 1.75 million yuan (US$216,000) and a spoon 100,000 yuan (US$12,500).

On show is a number of porcelain items including spoons, rice bowls, teapots and cups.

It’s believed that 1.2 tons of top quality raw materials, selected from over 10 tons in total, were used to produce over 4,000 pieces of porcelain.

Over 1,000 pieces were sent to Beijing, with the remainder stockpiled in Jiangxi. Some of the porcelain later flowed into markets and has been collected in recent years.
